Passion for Collectibles Fuels Blue Water Coins
By Gaylon Parker, Hometown News
TREASURE COAST – For anybody looking to buy or sell that special rare coin, they need look no further than Blue Water Coins in Port St. Lucie. The business is owned and operated by Greg Harding, who developed a tremendous passion for coins, stamps and collectibles when he was growing up in Chicago.
“I grew up hanging at the coin shops and stamp shops in Chicago, and when I moved here there wasn’t a lot of that,” Mr. Harding said. “I always played around in the coin and stamp market and about 25 years ago, I started really doing it and did all the big shows in the country. I worked very hard in the coin business.”
Mr. Harding moved to St. Lucie County in 1974 and has made a career out of buying and selling, coins, stamps, paper money and jewelry ever since. The company opened in 1995 and since then the name has spread across St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties.
Greg Harding – who developed a tremendous passion for coins, stamps and collectibles when he was growing up in Chicago – owns Blue Water Coins in Port St. Lucie. Mr. Harding moved to St. Lucie County in 1974 and has made a career out of buying and selling, coins, stamps, paper money and jewelry ever since. The company opened in 1995 and since then the name has spread across St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties.
“When I was 3 or 4 years old, I just loved this stuff,” Mr. Harding continued. “I guess my grandfather did it a little and so did my dad, and I would stop by a pawn shop with my father and I loved every second of it. In Chicago, there were coin and stamp shops everywhere and that was my thing and I loved every aspect of it.”
It is that love that leads Mr. Harding to drive anywhere to travel and help people with their coin collections, whether it is buying or selling there is no obstacle nor distance that can stop him from assisting his clientele.
Blue Water Coins is the premier coin, stamp, jewelry and scrap gold and silver dealer on the Treasure Coast and has been open since 1995. During that time, Blue Water Coins has been buying, selling, and collecting American and International coins, bullion, diamonds, jewelry, stamps, Rolex watches, vintage watches and paper money.
“I can look at anything and tell you what it is, if they are coins or stamps, because that’s what I do and it always made sense to me,” Mr. Harding said. “I am the most fortunate guy in the world because I get to do what I love every day.”
The company is ready and able to track down almost any rare items imaginable, but also buys collectibles from individuals, estate sales, coin shops and collectors from across the country. Blue Water Coins has the ability to purchase large collections and estates that other dealers cannot handle, and as one of the oldest and most reputable coin dealers in the area, Mr. Harding is a lifetime member of the American Numismatic Association and Florida United Numismatists, Inc., as well as current members of many other reputable organizations.
“I have had some really, really rare U.S. and world coins that were super cool, and it’s cool to buy a $50,000 coin or tell somebody – who thinks they have nothing – that they have a $50,000 coin,” Mr. Harding said. “There are things out there that are rare and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to handle them.”
Mr. Harding is always available to make appointments for his clients, and will travel anywhere to complete a sale, either at the office, individual’s homes, or even at the bank. Blue Water prides itself on customer satisfaction, Mr. Harding said. He also has been sent on missions to find everything from rare stamps to gold coins by customers who implicitly trust his eye and honesty.
“I spent the whole day buying a huge coin collection in West Palm Beach, and the next day I met somebody in Fort Pierce at the top of a high-rise,” Mr. Harding said. “It doesn’t make sense for me to sit in a building all day.”
With competitors out there like Craigslist and eBay, Mr. Harding said he has a major advantage because he can advise people against fake products and give them a genuine evaluation of their worth. “There are a lot of thieves out there that are good at manipulating items so that they’re altered. But when you deal with somebody like me, you get a lifetime of experience and so I help people first,” he said.
The company also advises customers of the value of their collections, and purchases the items at a fair and honest price from the residents of St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River Counties.
